Visiting the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona is a dream come true for many football fans. This iconic stadium is a symbol of the city’s deep-rooted passion for football. Named after one of the greatest footballers of all time and a Napoli legend, the stadium holds a special place in the hearts of fans worldwide.
If you’re a sports traveler looking to experience the electrifying atmosphere of a Napoli match this article will give you tips on how to buy tickets for a Napoli game and this page will give you details on the best travel routes to the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.
By Air
Arriving by air is one of the most convenient ways to reach Naples. The Stadio Diego Armando Maradona is about 10 kilometres from Naples International Airport (Capodichino).
The airport serves numerous European destinations as well as cities in other parts of Italy, like Rome, Palermo and Milan.
The city centre is easily reachable from the airport. You could walk it in less than an hour if you wanted to increase your step count! There is no train service from the airport to the city centre.
The easiest and cheapest way to reach the city centre is by taking the Alibus service. The buses leave from the front of the arrivals terminal at the airport. The journey takes about 20 minutes, depending on traffic and stops at the Piazza Garibaldi (Central Station). Tickets cost €5. You can then connect to local public transport from the Piazza Garibaldi in order to reach the station.
A taxi to the stadium takes around 20 minutes depending on traffic and costs approximately €35-40.
You may also wish to consider flying into Rome Airport when planning a trip to Naples. Flights here, in my experience, tend to be more frequent and cheaper. Express trains between Rome and Naples take 1 hour 15 minutes.
By train
If you’re traveling through Italy by train, taking a high-speed train to Napoli Centrale is the most efficient option. In my experience Italian trains are punctual, clean and relatively cheap. This means that if you are traveling for sports you can use Italian trains to watch multiple matches in one weekend. I always use the Trainline website to book my Italian train tickets.
Last time I went to watch Napoli play I watched a game at AS Roma on the day after, the cities are really close by express train.
For those sports travelers arriving by train, the stadium is easily accessible from Napoli Centrale, the city’s main train station.
You can take the Line 2 metro (direction Pozzuoli) from Garibaldi Station which is located next to Piazza Garibaldi (Central Station). You should get off at Campi Flegrei Station, which is a 5 minute walk from the stadium. This is how I usually get to the stadium. The journey is largely underground and takes about 20 minutes.
After the game it can be quite chaotic leaving the stadium and trying to get back onto public transport. Most people seem to queue to buy a ticket and electronic tickets don’t seem to be used yet in Naples, so be prepared to wait around or maybe go and join the locals for post-match espresso!
By Bus
Naples has an extensive bus network, and several routes will take you close to the stadium.
From the main railway station (Piazza Garibaldi) you can take bus 151 to Piazzale Tecchio. After 25 minutes, get off at the “Augusto-Politecnico” stop. From there it is only a few minutes’ walk to the “Stadio Diego Armando Maradona”.
If you are travelling from the city centre of Naples, you can also get off at the “Depretis” stop, which is about a five-minute walk from Piazza Municipio. The journey by bus 151 takes 18 minutes.
I recommend checking the latest schedules as they may vary on match days. Also, I really would consider getting on a bus as traffic can be very busy in Naples, especially on match day. My advice is to take the train.
